Great Prizes and Large Purse Help Put the Howl in Nicaraguan Mountain Bike Race

2010 Howler 2- Day Mountain Bike Race in Nicaragua

San Juan del Sur, Nicaragua – February 27, 2010

A wide array of international mountain bikers from Canada, the United States, Costa Rica and of course Nicaragua, along with many local sponsors, helped put the “Howl” in a great weekend of Nicaraguan Mountain Bike racing action.  Generous sponsor prizes and a big 1st prize purse drew the 2010 Howler Mountain Bike Race to a successful close. While an unbelievably fit Costa Rican racer took the overall “GOLD”, Nicaraguan team Immobia was very strong in overall participation in Howler Mountain bike race.

1st place winner Santos Corea Gutierrez of Costa Rica takes home $500 USD and local athlete Harvin Briones rode home on a new mountain bike donated by Vancouver visitors, Rod Dagnear and Tara Walsh.

“Not only did Rod and Tara make the huge donation of bikes, they flew down a bike box stuffed with new helmets, gloves, glasses, jerseys, tires, reflectors and brake pads so nearly everyone took home something from the race.  We were also lucky enough to give out a few complimentary nights’ at local resorts Villas de Palermo and Pelican Eyes, five $20 bread certificates from Pan de Vida and many press mentions from Del Sur News and La Prensa newspapers.  We couldn’t ask for a more generous outpouring of support for the event and the athletes.” commented Larry Thraen of Bodhin Adventure Services, the race organizer and promoter.

Rod Dagnaeu took 2nd position in Elite Division and won a night at Pelican Eyes and Tara Walsh was the only female racer in the pack.  “Not only did we enjoy the experience of biking in Nicaragua and competing in the race, it was a great opportunity for us to help build the mountain bike scene here.  Getting involved with the race while we were vacationing here really allowed us an opportunity to give back,” commented Tara Walsh the female rider from Vancouver, British Columbia.  “It’s wonderful to see the impact by donating to the cause and how it can touch the community, especially after witnessing the huge surprise on the face of Harvin when he received one of the two bikes we brought down.  It nearly brought me to tears.”

“The race simply couldn’t happen without all our amazing local volunteers.  Even a visiting doctor and his wife generously volunteered a half day of their vacation to oversee a technically challenging section of the course to help ensure the safety of the athletes.” mentioned Thraen. “Without our generous volunteers and sponsors, we would not have been able to attract the elite teams, generate interest from Costa Rica, and host a great experience for everyone involved,” he added.

The second annual, 2-day event was held in San Juan del Sur, Nicaragua and is planning to wrap the racing season with another race in 2010 in November.
